Why "the Same" Red Light Therapy Panel Costs $150 vs $900

Three quotes for "300 LEDs, 660nm+850nm, 500W" — at $150, $350 and $900. The spec sheet looks identical. The cost isn't. Here's where the money actually goes, and the 5 questions to ask before you compare prices.
Here's a scenario that plays out in our inbox every week. A buyer sends a spec: "300 LEDs, 660nm + 850nm, 500W, timer, remote." Three factories quote. The numbers come back at $150, $350, and $900.
The expensive quote looks like a rip-off. The cheap one looks like a steal. Both reactions are usually wrong.
The honest answer is that "the same spec" almost never means the same product. Here's where the money actually goes, and how to compare quotes without guessing.
Where the Cost Lives
These are rough ranges for a mid-sized commercial panel, based on our own cost structure and what we know from the industry. Percentages shift with volume, but the order of magnitude holds:

Why the $150 Quote Is Cheap (and Sometimes Fine)
There's no single villain here. A $150 panel usually differs from a $900 one in a handful of predictable ways:
- Chip grade. This is 80% of the story. Unbranded chips drift in wavelength, degrade faster, and vary batch to batch. If your business depends on consistent output, the savings will come back as returns.
- Certification. Real certifications cost five figures to obtain and maintain. A factory that skips them can undercut anyone. Whether that matters to you depends on your market — it matters a lot in Europe, less on some other channels.
- Testing. Aging every unit for 48 hours costs more than sampling. The difference shows up in your first 500-unit order's failure rate.
- Warranty discipline. A factory that promises 3 years must build for 3 years. Cheap panels are built for the 30-day Amazon return window, which is a different engineering target.
- Spare parts. Committing to 10 years of spare part availability means carrying inventory. That costs money. Someone has to pay for it.
And then there's the one that annoys us most: competition samples. Some factories build a "super sample" with premium chips to win the order, then ship mass production with whatever's cheapest that month. The sample isn't lying — it's just not the product.
The 5 Questions That Beat Price Haggling
Instead of asking for a lower price, ask these — and get the answers in writing:
- What brand and model are the LEDs? Put it in the contract. "High quality" is not an answer.
- Can you share a measured irradiance report? At what distance? Compare datasheets against measured values, not against other datasheets.
- What's the warranty, and what exactly does it cover? Who pays for the replacement unit and the freight? 3 years of warranty with no process is a slogan.
- What's your certification number, and can I verify it? If the certificate survives verification, ask which model it covers.
- Is the sample identical to mass production? Get it in writing on the PI. If it's not, walk.
A Manufacturer's Take on "Who's Cheaper"
We don't love "guess which quote wins" shopping, and here's the reason: the spec sheet leaves out exactly the things that determine cost. Two quotes for "300 LEDs" can differ by $100 on the chip line alone, and the cheaper one isn't necessarily the worse deal — if you're selling into a market where 2-year life is acceptable and price is everything.
